David considered himself a good fighter. The Army taught him how to kill with guns, knives and his bare hands. Afterwards the Police Department how to do it without killing someone. The lessons were taken on board and David was highly skilled at his job. He'd never call himself the 'best' at fighting since that was an invitation to unwanting confrontation and dares that he couldn't hope to complete. Yet he was confident at what he could do and more importantly he knew what he could not do. Many men wrote checks that their bodies just couldn't keep.

In this case David has misjudged his abilities. A call for backup had come in for a human suspect; a large man-beast who David had made the mistake of getting into a fistfight with. Two other officers, who David actually had a positive friendship with, had been struggling to get him subdued. The man had been a gorilla and David recalled painfully about clinging to him as he punched his ham-like head. As a result he had been slammed against the hood of his patrol car a few times and only with a heavy kick between the legs did the man go down.

By all rights they could have shot him but it would mean arduous paperwork. Besides David had been in danger before and getting the shit kicked out of him hardly qualified for lethal force in his eyes if there were other options. The gun was the last option. He had been dropped off at Tulane Medical Centre to get checked up and had hobbled from the parking lot towards the signing in area. He clutched his side and David suspected something wasn't quite sitting right since standing up straight hurt like all hell.

His right eye was all bruised up. Blood had obviously been pouring from his nose since two pieces of tissue were stuffed up there and his police uniform was covered in dark splotches. The woman behind the desk gasped at the sight of him and he tapped at his bag. "Nurse please, ma'am. For Officer David Gourdeau. NOPD." the Cajun said though his words were somewhat distorted because of the tissue blocking whatever blood had been pouring from his nose like a faucet. She nodded towards the waiting area which David happily slumped onto a chair.

While he waited to be seen he did a spot check of his equipment. CS gas spray, gun and ammo, telescopic truncheon, pocket knife, wallet, phone. Everything was where it should be. Equipment wise anyway.

Breath.

Nostrils flared out enough to gain deeper air which held the tinge of medicine and machines. Each room held it's own chorus of beeps and mumbles that were all enticing the petite woman to shift those oceanic eyes towards every entrance for a quick peek as hands pushed their way into the oversized pockets of those dark blue scrubs. The chaos that had once overcame her every second was now muted and fell into a stillness. It was a moment and one Gabrielle was trying to soak up.

Every movement caused a new ache to form but not one complaint would ever fall from between those wide lips. This was her job, her life and being pregnant certainly made it harder. The trauma center had left her exhausted on another level when she had been alone and now her body was in the constant process of creating life. It brought a whole other light to the word and feeling yet the witch was good as pushing through.

Boney fingers reached out for the counter as if that one solid surface would offer every bit of support that the witch needed. Irises glanced about the area and ended up noting quickly that there was someone waiting which was a rarity at this time of day. David Gourdeau. Gabrielle had met him a few times prior and knew full well that his line of duty would make him a regular here much like how others often attended a bar to get their favorite drink. Sadly, these visits were never pleasant.

Sketchers shifted against the hard floor so she could grab one of the wheelchairs. Rolling it towards the row of empty seats allowed it to pause right before the male as he finished checking over the items that seemed very important at that moment. "Hello David. Please, take a seat and let me push you to the room. In case your insides are as tender as the outside looks." a gracious smile followed suit to offer reassurance that she would make this visit as quick as possible. No one wanted to linger in the medical center. "Are you allowed to tell me what happened this time?" One hand lingered on her protruding stomach as she waited for David to move his frame into the chair so she could take the officer to an open room.

When Gabrielle approached David with an empty wheelchair he sort of just gave her a funny look as his brow furrowed. It was rather obvious that she was carrying a child and yet here she was offering to push a grown man along. David hadn't lost his ability to walk but it was sure as hell a great pain to do so. Yet despite his low-income bringing his family had always raised him to be a 'Southern Gentleman' and while he was more than willing to beat female suspects senseless should the need arise he had his own chivalric code.

He stood up which caused him to groan as he grasped his front, looking at her with one good eye while the other was swollen over and bloodshot. "Shouldn't I be the one pushing you along, Ms Lorne? If your intention is to take me somewhere with that there wheelchair I appreciate the gesture but I must politely decline." He smiled as best he could and shuffled off with her once Gabrielle led him to the open room.

Once inside David already had a practiced hand at what to do. He pulled off his equipment belt and sat it to one side before he gingerly loosened off his bulletproof vest. Once that was gone he opened up his shirt and slid it away from his broad shoulders before sitting onto the medical bed. Old wounds have been apparent; the two most predominant ones was a blade scar running over his sternum and an entry-exit would in the left shoulder from a bullet of a large calibre.

He huffed out a breath before he swung his legs up to lay down and looked over at Gabrielle. David had often spared people the details of the goings on of his injuries but he had a feeling he'd be here for a while. "Suspect was a big fat Latino biker. Fellow officers attempted to arrest without resorting to lethal force. I got into a fistfight with a gorilla. And he slammed me repeatedly against the hood of my car. I was like...grabbing onto him while punching his head. I got loose. He slugged me with those ham-fists of his so I kicked him square in the nuts. Hope I burst somethin'."

David was not a man who wished will upon people but he took being beaten against his own motor vehicle rather personally. "And what about you? How goes the trials of motherhood? Due date and all?"

"It was my intention, Mr. Gourdeau. To prevent farther damage. There is a very fine line between being a gentleman and risking your health though I do appreciate that you choose to be a gentleman often." An attempt to talk him into the chair was pondered on, but they had done this dance before and the male always won. It was not by force or knowledge, simply that Gabrielle understood some people were firm in their beliefs. Respect for each and every one was what made her bedside manners. Wheels turned as the chair was pushed to the wall where it would not be stumbled upon yet could be used for another who had a need for it.

Leading the way, silence ensured between them for that span of time until she could pull the curtain around to seal both in a false sense of privacy. A prepped tray was ready for her examination though Gabrielle did not grab a thing from it. Concerned eyes locked onto those sensitive ones that often told unknown stories with every twist of expression as David went over the story of how he came to be in the E.R. area and in need of medical attention. It sounded terrifying; to be locked in a physical altercation with someone who was much larger and possibly could defeat you in the worst way. "David..." was spoken quietly when the officer wished ill intentions upon his suspect. Gabrielle understood violence very well, but to condone it was another matter. It had no place in her life, yet much of the day circled around the action.

Moving closer, warm hands reached up to inspect some bruising that had already begun as the topic turned to personal matters. Had she not known David or respect him as a police officer, the answers would have been short and private. "The second time around is very different from my first. Heavier in a sense, but this time I understand the little things. I am also doing this alone. It does not quell the excitement I feel at meeting my son, soon. A month more. He is eager already."

Reaching for the stethoscope, those buds were placed into her ears before that silver disc rose up to listen to his heartbeat and the way his lungs took in the air. "Deep breaths and slowly ease the air out." Concentration took over those soft features as her head tilted slightly to the side while she listened. The lungs sounded good, but the beat of his heartfelt stammered a bit and caused mild concern. Pulling the plugs from their placement allowed the noise of that center to come back into focus. "Besides your nose, what else is currently hurting or aching? Your heart is struggling and it could be internal bleeding. I am going to send to have x-rays done, to which you are not allowed to walk to, Mr. Gourdeau." That last night was used in a firm tone that was reserved for work.

The news about potential internal bleeding was not something that was welcome for David. It could either be simple bruising or something that required surgery and the idea of spending more than a day in hospital board out of his skull was a nightmare for the officer. He did as he was told and took in a big lungful of air before he slowly breathed out so Gabrielle could listen for irregularities or difficulties. After being given the all clear for his lungs but some concern for his heart David tilted his head from side to side.

"Pain in the left side.Just along the ribs. Dull with sort of spikes of pain." answered David to the nurse's question. He started to wonder if being battered against the car had maybe given him a cracked rib or two. He wasn't injury prone and usually it was a small cut or mishap that he had to deal with rather than a full on beatdown. However it had happened and here he was being treated. Despite the need for medical care he didn't like being fussed over. Gabrielle's stern tone of voice when he was told he wouldn't walk to the x-ray gave him a reason to huff out a breath which caused another shot of pain in his chest.

He treated his body like a machine. Food was fuel and doctor visits were tune-ups. Yet being at hospital was something else entirely. It was a hotel with crappy beds, bad food and no swimming pool. The last time he had been in hospital was for norovirus which came from a dodgy Po'boy. He spent the time there throwing up what seemed to be an endless supply of vomit and the times he wasn't doing that or sleeping he was staring up at the wall day dreaming and being prodded by nurses and doctors.

"You can get an orderly to come wheel me away then. I don't want you putting pressure on yourself and junior there. Also if you could get security to store my belt and gun away that would be amazing. Can't just leave it lying around unless you don't mind me keeping it." Hospitals generally frowned on guns because they made people nervous and nervous sick people were a handful.

He was a cop though and in uniform so hopefully Gabrielle wouldn't mind. He sat up with a hiss of air and waited for the wheelchair to wheel him away.

Mr. Gourdeau was not the type to cause problems when coming to the facility, however, it was human nature to be stubborn. Gabrielle admired that; the environment was always an instigation for such a trait. No one wanted to be in a hospital. The strong orders of medicine mingled with illness along vast hallways and it was not a scent that everyone could get us to. This was also the place of strong suggestion to dealing with bad news that most people did not wish to hear. "This is something I can compromise on." her tone had once more settled into the pleasant hum of a stable voice.

Vanishing from his sight and beyond the curtain, it took only a handful of moments before that privacy was stolen from him once more to reveal Gabrielle with a male orderly and the dreaded wheelchair awaiting its next victim to come for a ride. A friendly smile was given to encourage David towards it while the orderly helped him in. Just as they were about to leave, one of the hospital officers came to take claim of the police material so it could be locked away from citizen's hands. As always, it would be returned when David was ready to leave. "I will see you in a little while." One hand found itself resting upon his bare shoulder for an extended comfort. A cold, firm palm gave that warm, tense muscle a squeeze before releasing so Gabrielle could gather paperwork and wait for the results of his x-ray.

When he was settled back into the stiff bed an hour later, Gabrielle pulled the curtains back with an escort by her side. The doctor had finally emerged from other patients to give David the news. One hairline fracture to his mid-rib and an extensive amount of internal bruising had landed him in a night stay at the hospital so they could keep an eye on his body to make sure no blood clots had formed. An inspection of his nose was given while Gabrielle shuffled about to collect the things she would need for the night. Ever the silent shadow, an IV was placed into his left arm to start on his saline treatment while small disc were placed upon that broad chest so they could monitor his heartbeat.

Once the doctor left, Gabrielle perked one shapely brow towards David. "Now you are stuck here with us all night. It is a wonderful time to catch up on all the soap dramas you miss out on." teasing was the goal, yet that remote found it's way into his hand. "I do not know how you do what you do. I would be terrified if someone much larger than I, extended such anger towards me when we are no more then strangers." The dangers of their careers were very real, but most did not choose where they were in the field. "Do you like being an officer, David?"

The route to the Radiology department wasn't particularly long but David hated being pushed along the chair like some invalid. Yes he had taken quite a beating in the line of duty but that was the job. It would have been painful to walk all the way over to get his x-ray taken but he'd have suffered it rather than the indignity of being wheeled around like he was eighty years old. It was tough going however being placed onto the table which lay underneath the projector that was fixed above on a moveable arm.

David let out a groan as he let the doctor go about the business of moving the x-ray from his feet to head. A few days worth of background radiation was fired into David's body as images were taken of his skeleton. It was a speedy process but one that required a lot of attention to detail. David swore he could feel the rays go through him but he told himself his imagination was just going a bit over-active. Once that was done he was wheeled back to his room. David pulled himself into the bed and groaned outwards as he looked up at the ceiling again.

The doctor gave the diagnosis. A hairline fracture to a rib and internal bruising. Not enough to warrant a surgical visit but enough to keep him off the job for a few days. Maybe a couple of weeks. He hadn't even noticed Gabrielle in the room nor the needle of the IV until he felt the cool rush of saline dripping into him in case for whatever reason he couldn't keep down liquids.

He looked at the remote and turned on the small television opposite him. Diagnosis Murder was on. Some crime drama from the nineties that David had never seen before but it gave some ambience and background noise as he turned his head to the nurse. "In the Army I used to jump out of planes." he replied with a small grin. His previous job had been much more adventurous. "It's not all gun play, fast driving and fist fights. Most of the time you're just answering to weird and wonderful calls. Some like this, others less serious. Surely you get your own interesting cases being a nurse and all?"

David set the remote aside on the small table next to him as he looked over at Gabrielle with Dick Van Dyke talking about some evidence and the EKG machine beeping steadily away.
